THE GIULIETTA SERVICE SECRET
By Mark Carpenter
The key is in the maintenance schedules scattered through the Instruction Book and just common good sense, attention to details and needing that ride the next day to work. The following is the factory maintenance pulled together for your use:
After Each Use:
If no anti-freeze is used in the car and the temperature is to fall below freezing, immediately empty the radiator and engine of water.
(Who runs without anti-freeze these days?)
Every 500 Km (310 miles):
1. Check the engine oil
2. Check the water level in the radiator
3. Check the tyre pressures.
Every 2000 Km (1250 miles):
1. Lubricate the top and bottom ball-joints of the steering knuckles and front suspension arm pins.
2. Lubricate the rear suspension arm ball-joint.
3. Lubricate the universal joints on the propeller shaft
4. Lubricate the steering arm ball-joints
5. Tighten the lubricator cap on the distributor body by 2 to 3 turns.
6. Check the level of the electrolyte in the battery.
Every 4000 Km (2500 miles):
1. Change the oil and oil filter
2. Top off the oil in the gear box, differential housing and the steering box and the brake system feed-tank (sic not my terms).
3. Lubricate the distributor, rear support bearing for the generator.
4. Lubricate links of the clutch control, gear-box control, carburetter (sic manual spelling), control and hydraulic brake control.
5. Lubricate hand-brake control links, hinges and locks on doors, bonnet and boot.
6. Lubricate windshield wiper control-rod ball joints, flexible cables for accelerator, hand-brake, easy starting device and speedometer.
7. Marelli distributors require that the lubricator be filled with BP Energrease L2 bearing grease.
8. Lucus distributors require that the rotor arm be removed and a few drops of oil be placed on both inside the cam spindle and the contact breaker plate to lubricate the centrifugal spark advance device which is beneath this plate.
9. Check the tension of the fan belt and adjust as necessary.
10. Adjust the tension of the valve timing chain.
11. Adjust the spark plug electrode gap.
12. Adjust the distributor contact gap.
13. Clean the fuel filter and the carburetter bowl.
14. Adjust the clutch pedal free play
15. Check the steering gear for excessive play, including steering box bearings, steering worm and roller and ball joints.
16. Check the front-wheel toe-in and camber.
17. Check the shock-absorber and their attachment to the car.
18. Check the rubber block supporting the engine, the propeller shaft and the rear axle.
19. Check that the tyres are inflated as specified.
20. Check brake pedal travel and adjust brakes (distance between the brake shoe and the drum) as necessary and check for air in lines, bleed lines if necessary.
21. Rotate the tyres in a cross-over pattern
Every 5000 Km (3,000 miles):
1. Service your car if fitted with a Solex 35 APAI Carbureter by checking the oil level in the damper.
Every 8000 Km (5000 miles):
1. Grease front wheel bearings.
2. Change the oil in the gear-box, differential housing.
3. Check the valve clearances and valve timing. Re-time valves if more than 2 degrees or 1mm difference in the cam cap marks and the marks on the cam.
4. Remove the air filter and clean by blowing air from the inside to the outside and washing it in petrol. After drying slightly moisten it with engine oil. (Would OSHA and EPA approve of this procedure?).
5. Adjust the ignition timing.
6. Overhaul the generator and starter motor brushes and the commutator.
7. Overhaul the air cleaner.
8. Check for tightness the nuts on the engine (i.e. head bolts minimum), wheels and various other members attached to the body. (This is good advice for anything or anybody over 35 years old, i.e. check to make sure nothin' has fallen off, and Hui, hopefully all the fun stuff works.)
9. Check the play in the front-wheel bearings, and adjust as necessary.
10. Balance the wheels.
10,000 Km ( 6,000 miles) or twice a year:
1. dismantle the damper, wash it carefully and replace the oil in the Solex 35 APAI carburetter.
20,000 Km (12,500 miles):
1. Have an authorized service station examined with a view to adjust the bevel drive and the play in the bearings.
This is a curious list of things that need attention. Some items are missing including replacing spark plugs, ignition parts and distributor parts. Today we take long service intervals for granted. This list shows that we have truly come a long ways in our automobile technology. For you owners that have these cars I hope you enjoy making them reliable as they have proven over the many years for many of our club members. Happy trails.
